Most of my life was lived prior to the onset of high technology and the Internet. After spending the last 15 years involved with these technologies, I have become deeply disenchanted with them. Their promises are hollow and they have created a deep sense of unease in me.

Some of my time is spent stripping metals from these discarded technologies and selling them as scrap for extra money. There is something so depressing about the pile of cracked plastic, broken glass and mangled motherboards. At times I feel as if I am butchering the remains of a strange biotech animal.

My studio is located in downtown Youngstown, Ohio. It is about 900 square feet. Here I create large oil paintings and sculpture, operate a wood shop and wood fabricating area, and store finished work, supplies and tools. I recently acquired thousands of board feet of high quality tiger maple and cherry wood from a large woodworking facility in my neighborhood that went out of business. The wood is very expensive if purchased commercially, and to my good fortune, I found it in a dumpster.
The wood shop is a sealed, dedicated area of my studio that houses a professional grade Delta table saw, a professional grade DeWalt compound miter saw, a professional grade dust collector, a variety of woodworking tools, and a significant amount of high quality tiger maple and cherry wood.

Wayyyyyy back in 1999 my sister was going through a divorce. She suggested I spend some creative time with my nephew as he was about 9 years old and struggling a bit. Being the artist I am, I decided to dress him up like an alien and take him around the western Pennsylvania countryside on a photo shoot. It was quite an adventure. Above is my favorite photo of the series.

Forward to 2004: I was working at the Butler Institute of American Art as a security guard. It was there I met Apollo Astronaut Alan Bean, one of the first men to walk on the moon. An accomplished artist who paints moonscapes, he was doing his first major solo exhibition. He spent a week at the museum prior to the grand gala opening of his show. Each museum worker was provided the opportunity to meet him individually. I spent a half hour alone in a conference room with him talking about art and what-not. Truly an amazing man, with a glow, so to speak. I had never met anyone quite like him. He took a keen interest in everything, as if he thoroughly enjoyed life and was constantly drinking in the sweetness that surrounded him. I was in awe and it occurred to me that he was as close to a true Saint as I would ever meet. During a lecture he gave at the museum, he described what it was like to see the Earth from space and the powerful spiritual effect it had on him.

Finally the night of his art opening arrived. It was attended by many wealthy and powerful people from around the country. CEO's from major corporations flew in. The parking lot was packed with Lamborghinis, Jaguars and every high end luxury car you could imagine. It was my job that night to help these people park in the small, cramped lot. I had to spend the entire evening outside, and as event began to wind down I helped people into their cars and directed them to the street.

Some people in Youngstown refer to me as an 'unapologetic self promoter'. Ah well, perhaps I deserve the title.

I could see Alan and his daughter in the museum foyer putting on their coats and preparing to leave. I knew they were catching a flight out of town that night. I rushed in, grabbed a folder I had hidden, ran up to Alan and blurted out "Mr. Bean! I have photographic evidence that ALIENS exist!" and thrust the folder at him. Oh MY God ! The look on his face! The daughter's jaw literally dropped. They stared at me, frozen, apparently afraid to move.

Slowly Alan reached out and gingerly took the folder from my hand. He held it for a second, took a deep breath and opened it. A huge smile spread across his face. Inside was the photo above. I said "Mr. Bean, meeting you was one of the best things to happen to me in my life. Thank you for coming to Youngstown to share your work." He shook my hand, started to laugh a bit and said he was going to frame the photo and hang it in his office. Then they thanked me, walked out the door, got into a waiting car and disappeared into the Youngstown night.
They are used as secondary or tertiary routes. Market Street for example, is perhaps the longest, being many miles in length and traversing the Wildlands. Currently, the majority of the buildings along it are being claimed by nature or the voracious demolition companies. Travel merely one block to either side of market for anywhere on its entire length and there is nothing but fields and woodlots with the occasional fragment of a neighborhood.
At the point where these corridors meet the suburban areas one will find neighborhoods from the Dead City still intact, almost like illusions. The houses are neat and tidy, the streets are clean and maintained, there is police protection and all seems right with the world. There is a sense that the American Dream is still alive, right here where we are standing. We feel the pressures and threats around us, but we know we can withstand them. After emerging from the Wildlands, this area is a relief. This is the mood of the neighborhood. We see this environment particularly where Market Street meets Boardman boarder.
Should a person only visit these neighborhoods, they would have the impression that the dead city of Youngstown is still alive and well. The fact of the matter is that these border communities are totally dependent for their survival on the suburban economies, and without the regular infusion of resources, they would collapse and be taken by Ruralization.

Mill Creek Park Otter caught in Conibear trap

A few weeks ago the Mill Creek Otter was caught in a Conibear killing trap in the Lake Newport Wildlife Sanctuary. The perpetrator, Daniel Volpe, had permission from the park managers to trap 'nuisance beaver' and muskrat. However he engaged in illegal trapping activities, including setting several Conibear traps on land, which led to the horrific maiming and assured death of the otter. Volpe was cited, appeared in Canfield Court, and was fined $240.00.

Conibear traps for beaver are incredibly powerful and are designed to crush the animal's skull, neck, spine and rib cage. They can break a grown man's arm and smaller sizes can break fingers. In a sense, these traps are humane, because, if set properly the animal is assured a quick death. Proper setting involves submerging the trap in water so that the animal drowns as well.

The Oldster managers of Mill Creek Park have outdated, dangerous views on the animals that inhabit the park. They use labels like Nuisance Animals, Diseased Animals, Invasive Species and Overpopulation to instill fear in the public and create an atmosphere of conflict between the animals and people. The park managers then engage in wholesale slaughter of large numbers of these creatures based on fear, faulty reasoning and outdated, game management practices. Additionally many 'non-target' non nuisance are most likely trapped as they inhabit the same environs a the muskrat and beaver. The Otter is the obvious example, as are other creatures such as herons, mergansers and mink which hunt for fish in beaver and muskrat burrows.

With advent of the internet, Social Media and digital photography, the animals of our Park are now international celebrities. The photos above have been seen by hundreds of thousands of people locally and worldwide. Thousand of people travel yearly to the park, specifically to enjoy and photograph the animals of the Park. These creatures are accepting of humans and daylight. They feel safe, and people can get close to them for clear photographs and general enjoyment. Bald Eagles, Large Whitetail Bucks, Otters, Mink, Foxes, Coyotes, Wild Turkeys, Owls, Herons, Raccoons are regularly seen at close range in the park.

The animals have become ambassadors for our community, particularly the community of New Young's Town. International business people, when seeing the Bald Eagles, are instilled with a sense of confidence about our community. Families wishing to move here view the animals as valuable educational tools for their children.

These animals are our friends who make us money and create a good reputation for our community. They are Community Treasures and should be treated as such.

* For the record, I spend time nearly every day in Mill Creek Park, I grew up on farms, spent much time hunting and trapping, and majored in Environmental Sciences at Ohio State University for 2 years.

The area outside of New Young's Town, known as the Wildlands, was fully taken by the forces of Ruralization by the late Twentieth Century. Appalachian Whites, migrant Hispanics, poor country folk from the surrounding counties and African Americans with rural southern roots moved in as the immigrant industrial workers fled. They reside in the remaining houses and attempt to eke out livings very much the way they have been doing for 200 years in rural America.
People of the Wildlands have created a Rural Economy that involves farming, construction, recycling, demolition, hunting, storage, drug dealing, mechanical work, and consultation. Many are artisans, such as metal workers, printers, bakers, woodworkers and members of the Creative Class who benefit from the local cultural industry provided by the museums, university and suburban areas.
Sadly, this area is afflicted with all the same problems of the Rural Midwest: drugs, gangs, entrenched poverty, inadequate health care, poor education, low water quality to name just a few. The difference in life quality between those that live outside of New Young's Town and those that live within it is astounding.

jasonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09612013054616734855noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4527689979577617431.post-65550675102538124692016-02-16T03:27:00.000-05:002016-02-16T04:04:37.467-05:00 New Young's Town : Part 1

New Young's Town is a small, midwestern, rural college town in northeast Ohio, typical of many in the region such as Alliance or nearby New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Geographically it is the corridor between Gypsy Lane and Fellows Riverside Gardens. Travel a mile or less on either side of this corridor and one will be confronted with vast fields, woodlands and wildlife.

At the center of this corridor is a gentrified downtown, with an abundance of banks, art galleries, luxury apartments, a rapidly expanding university, and internationally recognized art museums. The Wick and Crandall Park neighborhoods located to the North of the downtown, hold a vast collection of luxurious, early 20th century homes and mansions. The Mahoning Commons, southwest of the downtown, is known for artisan farms, small theaters, artisan studios and a slowly developing river front. At the edge of Mahoning Commons is Mill Creek Park which includes Fellows Riverside Gardens and several lakes. The visitor center in the Gardens is a delight, with a beautiful restaurant, art gallery, library, other amenities and splendid views of Lake Glacier.

The median income of New Young's Town is high in relation to the cost of living. The population is predominantly white and educated. Most people live a life of relative ease and luxury. Some have labeled it a Trust Fund Economy.

Beyond the fringes of New Young's Town, a city once existed named Youngstown. Known for steel making and other industrial production, the city claimed huge tracts of land for manufacturing and housing its tens of thousands of immigrant workers. A major decline began in the mid 20th century due to the steel industry's archaic modes of manufacture and other overpowering pressures. By 1977 the city collapsed, the immigrant population fled and Ruralization took the region in an unforgiving grip. By 1990 virtually nothing was left of the mighty city, and today the City of Youngstown is nothing but an unexplored archeological ruin beneath thousands of acres of vast wild lands inhabited by bears and coyotes.

The eve of my thirtieth birthday was rough for me, as things like 'decade birthdays' can be really stressful for people, particularly sensitive artists. As midnight was approaching, the phone rang. It was a Cleveland philanthropist, owner of Fourth World Productions, who was aligned with Art With Out Walls in New York City. He saw my sculpture at Cleveland Independent Art Gallery and wanted to know if I'd be willing to take the spot of an artist that had to drop out of a recent NYC production. It was 1996 and I was beside myself.

At that time I was making sculpture from found objects recovered from the streets, vacant lots and railroad tracks of Youngstown. I assembled the sun bleached bones of animal skeletons and cultural detritus over a frame of wood and metal. They combined a ferocious, macabre quality with a nod to Hollywood special effects and the Nail Fetishes of the Congo.

The next several weeks was a flurry of activity as I put the finishing touches on new sculptures and prepared them for shipping. I'd been to New York City many times before, assisting artists in transporting large artworks and doing general work for galleries and art professionals in the Manhattan art community. This time, however, I would travel alone and it was all on me.

At that time Art With Out Walls was an arts organization that renovated former commercial and industrial spaces of New York City to host art, fashion and music shows. Chelsea was just beginning to blossom as a cultural community. AWOW leased a 200,000 square foot floor of a Macy's warehouse there and turned it into a vast, professional gallery space where 14 artists were provided the space and financing to hold full solo exhibitions.

Absolute Vodka sponsored the show and partnered with the Dairy Council to create the premiere drink, White Russians, which were served generously the entire run. A fashion show was held and members of Cop Shoot Cop provided a Hardcore Industrial Ambiant music show for the closing reception. The budget for the event was a quarter million dollars, a great deal of money for 1996.

Opening night was overwhelming. There was a line of people waiting to shake my hand and talk to me, the artist from far away Youngstown, the Wild West to them. The highlight of the night was the arrival of Molly Ringwald, 80's teen movie star on whom I had a crush. She walked over to my most frightening sculpture, considered it for a moment, then placed her drink on the pedestal on which it stood, and left it.
I met so many great people as a result The Jack of Jill Show, the start of my modest but fruitful NYC art career.
Manhattan art collector and her painting acquisition, with Michael Green at her private art gallery. 2009.

For almost 20 years, I have been Art Agent for Michael Green Senior and we've had many successes of which few people are aware.
Mr. Green is an amazing talent, and his work can be found in prominent collections throughout the country, including The Butler Institute of American Art, one of our country's premiere art museums.
In 2008 my work as his agent took some astounding leaps. Since the mid 90's I'd been working on my New York City art career and I'd met several prominent, wealthy art collectors. One of them, while visiting Youngstown on a business trip, saw some of Michael's paintings and tracked me down. We began working together to build her collection of his work. She purchased many paintings at market value and had them professionally framed at a frame shop of which I was co-owner. Having just acquired her third luxury apartment in lower Manhattan, she turned one large room into a gorgeous, professional gallery to showcase his work. Since then I've seen many photos of parties and events featuring prominent New Yorkers having a grand time in the presence Michael's beautiful paintings.
And so, with a tip of my hat to my dear friend and business partner, Michael Green, I wish you the best for the upcoming years. We're not finished with NYC, friend, and NYC is not finished with us!

Bravo!

Soap Gallery, downtown Youngstown, hosts an amazing exhibition of art by women from Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. All the work is of high quality and represents some of the finest paintings, sculpture, drawings and ceramics that our region has to offer.
The opening was very well attended and had a definite metropolitan feel, tempered with our warm, small town quaintness.
The star of the show, in this artist's humble opinion, is Anastasia Soboleva, a successful, internationally recognized artist who is now studying Art in Cleveland. Her large scale paintings on bedsheets are compelling, seductive and complex. The female figure is her primary concern, the work is rich and painterly, done with a high level of technical skill.

Visit her website- http://sobolevanastasia.com/home.html

In a recent interview her involvement with the international art scene is discussed:

Because of genocide and cultural destruction of the Native Peoples of the Americas, the mythology of corn has been nearly lost. In our Western mythologies and traditions, the glories of the other grains are well known. The Bible would be an example of how wheat, an Old World grain, is heavily mythologized.

This lack of mythology of corn has allowed us to immensely disrespect the grain, its complexities, history and power. And yet, we are a corn dependent nation. It has become a mere commodity to be bought, sold and manipulated. We consume massive amounts of corn through fuel, food and feed for our livestock. 332 million metric tons of corn are grown every year, with 130 million metric tons being converted into ethanol.

However, when we step into a cornfield, we feel ourselves being submerged into history and mythology. We hear the whispers of the corn through the breeze as it rustles the long leaves. Go deep enough into a summer stand of corn, and you will swear you are being watched by someone or something, three rows over, just out of sight.

My immigrant Slovak family had a cattle farm for several generations, where I spent many summers bailing hay and doing other farm work. We grew many acres of corn to feed the livestock. It seemed like everything that I did growing up, everything I experienced, was somehow related to corn. From long hours of hard labor out in the fields under the hot sun, to frigid winter days hunting for that big buck, corn was the one constant.

As kids, we did crazy things like 'corning' where we threw handfuls of corn at cars, mobile homes and houses. When the grain hit any hard or metallic surface, it sounded like a shotgun blast.

My teenage years were very difficult, as we often lived in or near poverty. I once asked a girl on a date and she turned me down. I was crushed, as only an artistic, overly sensitive country boy can be. I went out into a corn field to be alone, to soothe my hurt feelings, to try and rid myself of the blackness that was over taking me. As I walked, something glimmering caught my eye among the roots of the young corn. It was a perfect, beautiful arrowhead of a very rare type. I felt elated and I took it as a sign.

Corn has been the subject of my paintings for decades now. I love the repetitive qualities of the kernels, the planted stalks and the furrows. Exhibiting an amazing amount of colors, textures and structural features, the plant always keeps me mesmerized and excited. Corn's presence in the Ohio landscape is always profound and sublime for me. I've often found myself awestruck by a whitened, ripened cornfield in December as heavy, winter storm clouds tower above it.

With the advent of the internet and digital technology, corn remains prominent in our collective vision. Can we ever go a day without corn making some headline in regards to genetic engineering, diet, economic policy or politics?
Paintings from my Black Dog series deal with deep psychological issues, personal battles and view of self. Begun in 1989, the series features a character who faces mayhem and misfortune at every turn. The paintings have won awards at various Butler Museum shows and twice been accepted into the Butler Museums's National Midyear Exhibition.

Moonlight on the Furrows is an oil on canvas and 40x60 inches. It was inspired my many walks in the fields on warm, Autumn nights. Originally titled Fukushima Moon, it is an agitated, irradiated landscape with the moon as antagonist. In 2012 it was shown at the Area Artist Annual, Butler Institute of American Art. In 2013 it was a featured piece in my solo exhibition, Feathers and Fence Posts, Fresh A.I.R. Gallery, downtown Columbus, Ohio. In June of 2015, DNA Gallery hosted my solo exhibition, Sol Invictus, with Moonlight on the Furrows being a featured work.

Western Pennsylvania is known in the paranormal field as a hotbed for strange beings, events and supernatural activity. For 30 years I have been a paranormal researcher, focusing on Humanoids. These are creatures that have a blend of human and supernatural qualities. They can range from normal looking people with superhuman abilities to creatures like Bigfoot and Aliens.

One of the most fascinating to me is the Shenango Valley Werewolf, a creature that has haunted the backwoods of western Pennsylvania for decades.

It has various names, including The Black Beast of West Middlesex and The Dog Boy. Described as frightening in appearance, it has patches of long black hair over white skin, ragged teeth, google eyes, and is about 4 feet tall. It is highly intelligent, can speak and has strange powers.

In 2006 the book Hunting the American Werewolf (Trails Books, Madison, Wisconsin) was published. Written by renown werewolf researcher Linda Godfrey, the book deals with werewolves from across the United States.

I wrote the subchapter titled The Shenango Valley Werewolf (pages 187-188) within the main chapter The Pennsylvania Pack.

In the summer of 2014, the national TV show Monster and Mysteries of America (Destination America, owned by Discovery Channel) came to Sharon, Pennsylvania with Linda Godfrey to do a show about the Shenango Dog Boy.
HELM, Youngstown Graffiti Artist and Tagger, died recently at the age of 23 as a result of a fall from a bridge while painting. His work illuminated the grim corners of our city. These photos of his paintings were shot in my neighborhood near downtown Youngstown, Ohio.

HELM, the notorious Youngstown graffiti artist and tagger is dead at the age of 23 as a result of a fall from a bridge while painting. He is being mourned across the city by skaters, artists and lovers of Youngstown street culture. Facebook is abuzz with sad sentiments from fans as I write this.

HELM's work can be seen throughout the region known as New Youngstown (the corridor between Gypsy and Belle Vista), in prime locations on bridges, vacant buildings and in alleys. It is rumored that HELM's hideout was in an abandoned building in the upper Wick neighborhood.

During the summer and fall of 2013 an infamous battle raged

between HELM and OG that grew ugly, even by Youngstown standards. As the months passed, the drama increased tremendously and there was community outrage. The police intervened, forcing OG to flee the scene and leaving HELM as the undisputed master of the streets and the Night.

Youngstown has thriving modeling and video production industries. Because of HELM's image quality and his choice of aesthetic locations, these industries have included his work in thousands of photos and dozens of video productions. Some of the most beautiful women from northeast Ohio and western Pennsylvania have been photographed in conjunction with HELM's graffiti.

So to HELM, Youngstown bids you fond fair-well. May your next life be filled with artistic endeavors and may you find it as enriching as your life in our city. Even as the elements fade your paintings, they will still live on in our hearts and internet modeling portfolios for many years to come.

Ohio Song originated as a community mural project. A group of great kids helped me paint it at the John J. McDonough Museum of Art as part of the Town Hall Project in 2012.

In the Autumn of 2103, the mural was a featured piece in my solo exhibition, "Feathers and Fenceposts" at Fresh A.I.R Gallery. The Summer of 2014 brought the inaugural opening of Nove Gatto Gallery (now 'M' Gallery) at the Erie Terminal building in downtown Youngstown with Ohio Song as a featured work.

About a year ago my work was featured in a Gala Art Auction at the beautiful Hilton in downtown Columbus. The sale of the original woodcut titled 'Great Horned Owl' benefitted Fresh A.I.R. Gallery, a nonprofit art venue that exhibits the work of those that have been touched by mental illness and substance abuse.

It was great night, with about 700 people attending. The lovely and talented Ms. Courtney Waskin accompanied me.

Participation in the Art of Recovery Gala Art Auction is part of my ongoing advocacy for mentally disabled artists. The next auction will be happening soon and I plan on donating a large oil painting to the event.
